Phyllis Hall
-About
Although some may describe her as a “one hit wonder,” Phyllis Hall was well-regarded as a gospel singer and songwriter. She met Roberta Martin in Philadelphia and soon thereafter introduced the song “He knows Just How Much You Can Bear” to Martin and members of the Roberta Martin Singers. Roberta Martin was a significant musician and publisher of gospel music in Chicago operating under the name “Martin and Morris,” and it is assumed that she claimed ownership to the copyright of the song by Phyllis Hall (and the music of many lesser-known names as well). Although Hall is the composer it was Roberta Martin who held the copyright and published the song, and whose name often appears in credit ascriptions.
