Wynton Marsalis
1961 -About
Wynton Marsalis was born in New Orleans to Dolores Ferdinand Marsalis and jazz pianist Ellis Marsalis Jr. He began playing trumpet at the age of six and his exceptional talent was immediately discovered.
Marsalis continued his education at the Juilliard School of Music in New York City and became well-known in the jazz community very fast. Since then, he has produced a number of albums and received numerous Grammy Awards for his performances and compositions. Blues, gospel, and classical music are just a few of the many inspirations found in Marsalis' music. His creative output displays a profound regard for the African diaspora and its influence on American culture and history. Marsalis has emerged as one of the most significant artists in modern jazz and a major voice for the African diaspora through his music and activism. Along with his musical accomplishments, Marsalis has actively promoted jazz around the world and been a vocal supporter of jazz education. He established Jazz at Lincoln Center, a nonprofit committed to jazz performance, education, and preservation, and serves as its artistic director.
