Eugene Broadnax composed Alas That Spring Should Vanish with the Rose. He also published his arrangement of the hymn What a Friend we have in Jesus in 1955. Mr. Broadnax is featured in Black American music: past and present (pub. Hildred Roach, Krieger Publishing Company, 1992)
