Cecil Cohen (1894 -1967) was born in Chicago in 1894. He was educated at Fisk University and Oberlin Conservatory. Mr. Cohen taught for many years on the faculty of Howard University in Washington DC. Many of Cohen’s songs are settings of the poems from Langston Hughes and Countee Cullen. His song “Death of an Old Seaman” is featured in the Anthology of Art Songs by Black American Composers compiled by Willis C. Patterson.
