Terence Blanchard

Terence Blanchard, (b.1962) a 2018 USA Fellow and a five-time Grammy-winning trumpeter/composer, has been a consistent artistic force for making powerful musical statements concerning painful American tragedies- past and present. He has composed the scores for numerous Spike Lee films, including 4 Little Girls, Malcolm X, and most recently, BacKkKlansman, for which received his first nomination for the Academy Award for Best Original Score. While studying jazz at Rutgers University, Blanchard was invited to play with the Lionel Hampton Orchestra in 1982 before childhood friend Wynton Marsalis recommended him as his replacement in Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers. Following a string of collaborative recordings, he released his first self-titled solo album on Columbia Records in 1991, leading to a string of acclaimed often conceptual works and over forty movie scores. Since 2000, Blanchard has served as artistic director of the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz. In 2011 he was named artistic director of the Henry Mancini Institute at the University of Miami. In the fall of 2015, he was named a visiting scholar in jazz composition at Berklee College of Music.
